Christine,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how heartbreaking it is.
A few years ago I had a very special beagle named Pete. He was like no other
dog I had ever had. He was a big (35 lbs) red and white beagle who thought he
was a cat. He had been raised with cats and had taken on some of their habits.
Oh, the stories I have about Pete!! I loved that dog with all my heart and
soul. One problem we had was that he'd run out of the house or dig under the
fence the 1st chance he got and then take off.
One afternoon I came in from work. My teenage son came in right behind me and
didn't close the front door all the way. Before I could run to close it Pete
and Buddy (my other beagle) had run out the front door. We drove around and
found Buddy, but Pete was not with him. We drove around, but could not find
him. They both had collars with my cell phone number embroidered on them and
they usually 'found' people who would call us.
About a hour later I got a phone call from someone who said a beagle had been
hit by a car in front of their house and my phone number was on the collar. The
car who had hit him did not stop. I asked them if he was badly hurt and they
said "Well, he's still alive, but hurry". There was a crowd of about 4 or 5
people around him when I got there. As I pulled up I heard a male voice say,
"he just went". It was like he waited until he heard the sound of my car and
then took his last breath. It was the saddest thing I'd ever experienced up
until that point in my life. I bent over him crying "Pete, Pete". I was
hysterical. I hugged him and kissed him a million times. Pete's fur always
smelled so good. The saddest thing was that from the direction in which he
seemed to be headed when he was hit it looked like he was coming home. I tried
to pick him up to put him in my car, but he was too heavy. I didn't expect him
to be so heavy, as I had picked him up a thousand times before
when he was alive. Someone got a large box and a couple of the men placed him
in it and put it in my car. I cried all night long. The next morning, with my
eyes swollen, I took him to my vet to have him cremated. I cried for quite a
few weeks, but I've never stopped missing him. They gave him back to me in a
little cedar chest with a brass plate with his name on it. I treasure it.

The pain does slowly heal, but it takes time. Cry all you want. Talk about
Sugar as much as you can, remembering all the funny moments you had with her.
Look at her pictures. Cherish her memory and cry, cry, cry. Every day will
become a little easier, but it will take a while, My advice is to get another
chi. It won't replace Sugar, but it will help your heart heal.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your kids,
  Lucy

I just wanted to know if anyone ever lost a dog to being hit by a
car, or even worse,if anyone went looking for their missing dog,to be
the one to find him/her on the road? THis has been very
heartbreaking. I noticed Sugar was missing today, and knew she must
have slipped out the door and ran off. She had a bad habit of doing
that. We live in a culdisac and rent a house. I thought about buying
a radio fence thingy..but they're expensive,and so havn't done it
yet. Well, I found her,and she had already passed away. THis is not
the first dog I have ever had. We had quite a few,and i didn't like
any of them, but a german shepard...anyway this one was different. She
loved us and we all would fight over who got to sleep with her :) .
My son (10)kept asking to have the cats to slep with, since he
couldn't slee pwith Sugar tonight. He is really quiete, and I know hes
not happy, but he is doing a god job at hiding his feelings. My 4yr
old is angry with me(he has to be angry at someone),and I have been
crying since 8pm. I dont want people to feel sorry for me,I just
wanted to hear that others have gone though this, because I know many
people do ,but this is the first time for me. thanks for
reading.christine p.s.sugar would have been 2 this november. She was
5lbs,and would go potty outside. she went to the door to tell s when
she had to go. When we asked her, shed turn around in circle really
fast 2-3times,and run to the door. She slept with me&my husband,or my
10yr old. if the doorbell rang,or someone walked thru the door, she
would excessively bark. WHen the mailman drives by,she barks.
Tomorrow I wont know when the mailman comes.
