Amazon has heating pads with just the on/off switch--no timer! I got mine there. With older dogs you do not have to worry about chewing on cords but if you have puppies run the cord through a piece of PVC pipe to deter them. I have three heating pads on the floor where my 20 year old dog can find them. That's about all he can do now is enjoy the warmth. He is blind from cataracts and deaf too but still gets around pretty well so we keep on trucking. Then I have 2 other heating pads I use on the couch and in bed and the chi's are always sharing. Another good place to get the heating pads is at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army or thrift stores. When they get cold or chilly they go right to their warm pads.

Good to know about the blankets, we got a couple of really nice ones on sale at Petsmart but we'll get a few more. These ones are very soft & warm. I'm pretty sure they'll be ok when they snuggle up together, but we don't want them to *have to* snuggle all the time just to keep warm when they'd rather play. With our house at 62, that's kind of what we wound up doing all winter It's better this year but I'm still not sure if the new setting of 64 will be warm enough for the dogs. We got them sweaters for outside but I like the t-shirt idea for inside. Hadn't thought of that. If your house is kept on the cold side, then a light weight t-shirt can be put on your dogs, you can also look for a warm pad to put on their bed, there are some that use electricity and some that use a heated pack (perhaps stuffed with rice and warmed in a microwave) inserted into the pad. Google and see what available in your area. > > Gloria > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: barefootjan <barefootjan@...> > To: Chihuahuas <mailto:Chihuahuas%40yahoogroups.com> > Sent: Wed, Nov 28, 2012 3:39 pm > Subject: [Chihuahuas] hot dogs? :) > > > > > My husband & I are looking into rescuing a bonded pair of 14 year old Chihuahuas. > We've never had any small dogs before, let alone small dogs with a single coat. Can anyone provide us with some guidance as to their "climate" requirements? I understand that they need protection outdoors, but what about indoors? will they do OK in a relatively cool house, or does it need to be kept warm? how warm? > We live in northern New England. > thanks! > Jan > > > > > > > So glad you are considering the rescue of older Chihuahaus, often they get overlooked.
