I had a similar behavior with a medical device from which we removed the accumulator. The power supply can supply the mean power, but not the peak power. In fact the battery pack has two functions: delivering power when no mains is available, and smoothing the peak power drain with mains connected. We solved the problem by replacing the accumulator (battery) by a set of electrolytic capacitors (as much as there is room in the battery compartment with an as large as possible capacity).
