I had similar thought with Harry. Before the battery nearly death, I had to wait a couple minutes to fill-up the battery before start-up. If not enough battery charge, the laptop back to shut down. It was repeatedly many times before succesfully start-up. Until after then the batery got totally unchargedable. I put 8x1000mA ni-cad battery to replace just for start up only when the harddisk in operation. I think ni-cad good for high drawing amps in short period, but still failed. Recently, consulting with the PC engineer who has experience with such laptop said that supply from the main adaptor shoud not have a problem - no worry about the empty battery. He suggest to replace the main board but no more stock around.

The power supply can supply the mean power, but not the peak power. In fact the battery pack has two functions: delivering power when no mains is available, and smoothing the peak power drain with mains connected. We solved the problem by replacing the accumulator (battery) by a set of electrolytic capacitors (as much as there is room in the battery compartment with an as large as possible capacity).
