Hi Declan, I think first you have to decide between laser or Ink printers. If you really want dirty fingers and hassle the cheapest solution is a ink printer and third party ink. This works well with my good old Epson1200 (A3+) and some third party ink cartridges, for photos also.
If you want no hassle and a always good looking black white printings you should go for a laser. Brother printers have cheapest costs for new toner (they only replace the toner cartrigde and not the whole development unit as HP does.) However I think they produce ozon - you should always open the window after printing.
