4. There has been very little mention of the competition. What other
mailing lists do people sit on? I'm on one general linux list besides
this. I would like a more active hardware list as well. Any suggestions?
What other forums do people use?

- yahoo group MSP430 - sometimes we are also talking about housings, batteries, wireless
links and alternatives, electronic design, weather in australia, Al's condition ... :-)
I think other uC related groups at yahoo are also good lists (AVR, lpc2000, rabbit, pic
do not know the right group names) Just take a look at the number of members. >2000 and
it is useful.

- newsgroup de.sci.electronics (and the english sci.el... ones, also comp.arch.embedded)

I think the chipdir-list is/was mostly related to find info of some obsolete chips - no
pure electronic design questions. This is why the number of questions is a little limited.

This is true imho. There are many specialized maillists, newsgroups and internet forums, where specialists are participating and the possibility to get answers is quite high so people like to post on topic questions there. Some newsgroups have a website with faq and lots of info.

Another fact is that some questions could easily be answered by a little selective browsing (Altavista, Google, whatever), or the answer can be found on a specialized website. E.g. for anything about repair a good starting point is:
http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/

I have been subscribed to the old ChipDir-L since october 1996. From the original welcome mail:
The chipdir-l mailing list has been created for those using
and appreciating the ChipDir.

The Chip Directory consists of several chip related lists like
a numerically ordered chip list, a functionally ordered chip list,
a list of chip manufacturers, a list of controller embedded
tools manufacturers, chip pin-outs, lists of electronics books,
CDROM's, magazines, WWW sites etc.

This is a non moderated list and all topics regarding chips
are welcome.

The list will also be used to announce new versions of
the ChipDir and other organizational issues.

The general netiquette rules apply.
