Maybe this thread would be a good place to discuss how this could be
made more discoverable.  Adam wanted a feature and Ojan even proposed
a keyboard shortcut for it; where *should* Adam have looked?

It appears the help center reference doesn't include this shortcut:

There was also a thread on tab opening behavior earlier:

It even included a patch.  This, and the popularity of the Tab Mix
Plus extension for Firefox, may indicate that for some users this just
needs to be configurable.
