Churchill was not responsible for the Guarantee to Poland. If one person
deserves praise or blame for that it is Lord Halifax.

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Francis Neilson's The Tragedy of Europe

I've been reading through Francis Neilson's The Tragedy of Europe (vol 1-5) the
past few days. Some of you may be familiar with Neilson as one of the early
"revisionists" concerning Churchill. Much of the conclusions found his book,
The Churchill Legend, were first published in this five volume set.

Each volume of The Tragedy' consists of about 700 pages and the series is a
journal maintained by Neilson during the war. He gives updates on the day's
news, and adds his own opinion and supplemental historical analysis. There is
much criticism for Churchill, FDR, and Mussolini, but when it comes to
Churchill, there is typically venom. The book reminds me a modern day blog
maintained by an anti-war writer.

Regardless of your views on Churchill, the books are interesting. From the very
beginning, Neilson saw the independence guarantee to Poland as a mistake and
identifies Churchill as the main "culprit" in instigating war with Germany. I
rarely agree with his conclusions, but Neilson essentially laid the foundation
for writers such as Patrick J. Buchanan when it comes to criticizing
Churchill's conduct before, during, and after the war.

Has anyone else read through this series or any other work of Neilson's?
