Without knowing the implementation details, can we agree that the requirement on the Solaris CIFS server is that it be configurable to support whatever it is that an XP Home system does when you say "\\servername" to its Explorer, in a way that is from the client user point of view identical to the way it works with Windows?
I don't know what it's doing (but I can get network captures if desired), but if I put a brand-new-from-BestBuy computer on my network and set its workgroup name to HOME, I can say "\\dog\Jordan" and be browsing my directory on my desktop, read-write. (And similarly for access via "My Network Places".) I'm not sure it's actually necessary to set the workgroup name. Solaris CIFS server should be configurable to do that, so that I could replacing my existing XP Home "dog" with a Solaris system and have the change be completely transparent to the client systems.
