Well, we need to tackle the problems one by one :)

So you have two problems here?

1. System doesn't show up in network places
2. You cannot access the share

In the second case what do you exactly mean by not
being able to access the share. you say you cannot
access it because you don't see it, or even if you
try to access it directly using \\server\share you
get some kind of error. If the latter what the error
is?

Please run the following script on you Solaris box and post the
output so that I can take a look at your configuration:

which Solaris build are you running?

Yes, all 192.168.0.0/24

Its a home lan where I've been accessing these machines from linux
samba server and the machines have likewise been accessing the samba
server for years. All the machines show the linux samba server
in `network places' (except linux machines of course)

I'm trying to build up a zfs NAS for backup on this lan. It been a
serious pain in the booty so far.

What is so puzzling is that 1 windows xp can access the zfs server.
But even that one cannot display it in `network places'

I wouldn't care about that except that my windows appliances that do
the backups (`Retrospect-7.x' for serial backup and acronis for image
backup) Both applications expect user to be able to navigate to the
receiving file with standard navigation in windows explorer like
dialog, accept there is no `location' box where I might type in the
server address, and need to be able to navigate to it in the normal
windows way.

Afshin, do you have a osol server that windows boxes are capable of
showing in the windows `network places'?

If so, what diagnostic information can I give you that would allow us
to see a difference in setup... ?

Do you have special permissions on yours?

I saw advice somewhere saying that fellow used:

  chmod A=everyone@:full_set:fd:allow pool/filesystem

I tried that on one share... I saw no difference at all, other than
the permissions changed to 777.
