Does it work if you specify IP instead of the server name?

So does it work?

You didn't answer if you have an osol cifs server that appears in
windows `network places' on windows machines.

We have a lot of different setups here so whether something works for
me or not does not provide much useful information to root cause your
problem. That's why I try to understand your setup.

That may be but some things maybe more or less universal.

You still didn't answer the question:
Can you see an osol cifs server on any of your windows clients using
the Windows applet`Network Places' or not?

Yes, we can!

[...]

As long as all systems are in the same subnet there shouldn't be
any problem. You haven't disabled Netbios on any of your Windows
system by any chance, have you?

And it was not a problem before I started adding the Osol cifs
server.
And by the way, I'm unable to mount any of the windows machines shares
on the osol server either.

I'm afraid, I can't help you with the client side issues.

Afshin

I get a useless baffling error message when I attempt to mount a
windows share with my user `reader' on osol mach.

  mount -F smbfs //mob1/mob1-c /mnt/mob1-c
   Password:
   mount: mount_smbfs: /mnt/mob1-c: Not owner

Not owner of what... The mount point `/mnt/mob1-c'
Ahhh not so fast:

  ls -ld /mnt/mob1-c

drwxr-xr-x 2 reader wheel 2 2009-03-25 16:53 /mnt/mob1-c

User `reader' is the owner there... so where is the message referring
to?

Trying the same thing with root:
  mount -F smbfs //mob1/mob1-c /mnt/mob1-c
  Password:
mount: session setup phase failed: syserr = authentication failed

The passwd I tried is the same on all windows machines but just to
make sure I also tried roots passwd with the same result.

I had a quick look at your config and I didn't see anything obviously
wrong with it.

Well that's good news... if you saw nothing in all that output... I
must be at least close to a correct setup.

PS-I've meant to mention several times now that I really appreciate
all your helpful input... You've patiently followed along through at
least 2 threads now... you've been very patient with my lack of skill
with this stuff too so I thank you for that.
