Hi Doug,

good point to note indeed....

To expand a bit on that -- the reason is that there is so much flexibility
in most media formats. And still more, many media formats can be (and indeed
are frequently) implemented slightly wrong.

Now, any programmer implementing a "media player" has the huge interest
that his creation can play as much media from other people as possible. Thus
any such implementer of a "media player" has a huge desire to silently ignore
small misfits in any media file he accepts. Which, obviously is bad for your
intention, because this way you don't get a clear indication when something
is broken.

But now, if we try to turn the situation around and try to come up with a
software which is pedantic and picky and clearly indicates any problem,
interestingly enough we exchange an easy goal (just get it playing "somehow")
with an almost impossible goal (find out why some unknown other software
"out there" at youtube.com can/can not play a media file).

Currently, I can only see the (admittedly pretty much lame) solution
to provide a set of presets "known to work". At least that would be
as start, and maybe then some day there is a really smart programmer....

Cheers,
Hermann V.
