as soon as I add another video track and put the transparent .png

Just for a start I'd check if you have the alpha channel enabled.
Go to Settings->Format and make sure your selected colour model is "YUVA".
Is there a *good* web page/site out there that covers most of these
type of issues, and how to work around them?
If by *good* website you mean a site that has the solution to your own
problems in the home page, then the answer is
"no, unless you create it".
I created my own, based on 5 years of daily work with Cinelerra and on
teaching Cinelerra to newbies as young as 9.
If you are not scared of searching info inside websites you can find a
lot of help in blogs and tutorials:

All I want to do is put a couple overlays on this video. does it
really have to be this hard?
Cinelerra is powerful.
Her appearance is daunting.
She is not for the faint of heart.
I'll quote HiTech RedNeck: "Cinelerra is like the cockpit of a jet
rather than the dashboard of a car".
For a task as simple as putting a couple overlays I'd recommend you use
something simpler, like Avidemux.
...unless you want to use this task as a pretext to get acquainted with
Cinelerra, as an investment for future use...
Good luck!
