One more thing from Galpin - he mentions the "revival" in England of the EG as the PG that Ron F. mentioned at the beginning of this discussion.
He says that in the nineteenth century the EG in its various forms "disappeared in favour of the easier 'Spanish' Guitar, but an attempt was made a few years ago to revive the English instrument under the name of the 'Portuguese' Guitar" (36). This is from the Third Ed., revised in 1932; the first edition came out in 1910. He then goes on to wax lyrical about what a fantastic instrument the EG is, so I guess I'll forego unpacking for a few more hours and go practice...
