Frank,
Organologists such as Curd Sachs use the term "Lute" ("Laute") for exactly
this configuration. The Renaissance cittern, the English guitar, the Portuguese
guitarra, the Spanish guitar, the mandolins (flat or bowl-backed) and, of
course, the Renaissance lute, are all "Lutes" in this sense.
Perhaps it might help a little to think of instruments in tems of all horses
being quadrupeds, but not all quadrupeds - not even all hoofed quadrupeds -
being horses. (All citterns are "Lutes", but not all "Lutes" - not even all
flat-backed "Lutes" - are citterns).
Cheers,
John D.
