Dear C Mitchell,
I would contact the AKC. Give them as much information as you can. I have
had luck tracking down breeders with simply their last name, and state they
live in, and the breed of dog in question. Ultimately, they cannot issue you
any paperwork as it has to go through the proper channels (breeder to akc,
once it is in order, yours can be processed).
I had a situation recently where I helped a desperate party as much as I
could. I will give you the details of what happened and what resulted.
Person "A" has a shih tzu female with AKC papers and full ownership. She
wanted to breed her girl to her groomers Shih Tzu. They are friends and the
breeding took place. The groomers male is the son of a well known AKC shih
tzu champion (note i say "son of" :) Person "A" now had a pregnant female
with 9 pups to be born within a couple weeks when I got a call. Apparently
she and her groomer friend went about this "assuming" the breeder of the male
would hand over papers that didn't previously come with this boy????? Well,
the breeder was furious that this breeding took place simply because she sold
this male shih tzu as a pet which is why he wasn't registered. (he was a pet
because he was smaller than he should have been, not a runt, just not
spectacular..)
So I didn't know how I could help, I was trying to explain that she had a
litter of little pets on her hands and she has learned a big lesson about
learning a bit about what you are doing before having a litter! (kind of
falls on deaf ears sometimes) but I called anyway, and the AKC was actually
extremely helpful. They indicated they did have record of the male pup in the
litter registration the breeder had filed (all i had was the breeders name,
state, and the approximate month the male was born) the AKC indicated it was
"not" too late to register the male, then in turn register this litter of 9
pups. But, and this was a big but... they told me that one of these ladies
had to "make nice" with the furious breeder, or their hands were tied.
Well, no luck there, she refused to take their calls :) and the 9 healthy
shih tzu pups were placed with no papers (which is probably the best thing
that could happen to them??? the best of a bad situation... (funny turn of
events was the breeder brought her dog to be groomed by this groomer a few
months later, and the ladies (the pair that did the breeding) each had a pup
from this litter with them at the shop. The breeder was so taken by the pups
that she wanted to go back and get the sires registration complete so she
could register these pups and use them. both ladies declined and have
spayed/neutered their pups and don't want to do any more breeding)
So, the AKC can at least help you understand if there is a "pending" litter
registration etc. They were very open with me and told me that the shih tzu
breeder that successfully registered the litter had in fact sent in an
individual registration for this little male. She accidently forgot to
enclose a check and they have never processed the papers. I was surprised
they gave so many details to me on the phone...
