I have taken an 18+ lb cavalier on a flight many times from California to
Naples Florida, and to Boston with no problem. I have a black Large Sherpa,
not an off brand, the brand name in case that matters?? It is like a soft
quilted material, and it's fairly wide. The height isn't really critical
because it's soft, and your dog can't stand too much during the flight
anyway?
In fact, I think Darby was 23 lbs on average when he flew? he's tall also.
The success of a trip also depends on the cavalier? It is harder to take my
15 lb cavalier McGwire on a 1 hr trip, then take Darby on a 6 hr trip in a
plane. Darby goes right to sleep when we board the plane. I scoot the
sherpa underneath, and unzip the front panel. Darby would never come out, or
walk away. He stretches his arms out and is fast asleep before we even take
off. He just loves it. He sleeps the whole way. If you picture the
underneath of the seat, when a dog is lying down, the sherpa has room to take
up almost 2' in width if the dogs chooses to stretch. Almost like he's
wearing a sherpa suit and it molds with him. He can get up and turn around
because he is at my feet, he sometimes does that just to stand up. I like to
take the late night flights, they are dark and quiet, but Darby can go
anytime. I have never traveled on the plane that his sherpa was zipped, I
think he would be uncomfortable, just simply lack of nice ventilation.
Mcgwire is small and can stand and turn under the plane seat and move and put
himself in any position as he is significantly smaller than darby, but he
isn't as cooperative. He barks and scratches, and ate the back of one sherpa
right off and came out under the seat in front of me, walked through the
passengers to their surprise, out to the aisle, came walking back to my aisle
and came to me.
He is 11 months old and when i have him a bit more trained :) he might do
fine. In the meantime I stick to short flights with him. (I tried a sedative
and it had no effect)
Crate training him is not the solution either, United & American air
typically let him sit in his own seat up and down the california coast when
it's a flight with no food service, and i have my own 3 seats. He just sits
there quiet as a mouse like a passenger. It's not against the law if there
is no "food cart" service, it's just airline policy. However, my giving in
and letting him sit on the seat has made it harder to get him back in the
bag, so it's my fault with him! We are back to square 1 !! I've even looked
into just getting a little charter plane LOL
