Hi Anathea,
People criticize me for this, but I hike with my cavaliers frequently (not fre.
enough). I have 3 adults that I take with me, all are trained to "come" more or
less. I get back quite a bit away from the road before they can go off leash. I
call them back and reinforce with food a few times at the beginning of each
hike, so they remember. They're a joy to walk with, they stay together and run
back & front & off the sides & rarely get out of sight. And they love it more
than anything, even food.
They easily do 3-5 miles (about what I can do) in the mts. Recently had one of
them to Blue Mt in the Adirondaks.
They will go up to other hikers, I call them and leash them when someone's
approaching.
My oldest hiking dog is 7 and beginning to tire at end of hikes. I think her
hearing is not what it was, plan to try a whistle.
I never let them off leash near roads. You can't train that.
Here in NJ we have hunting from Oct 1 through Jan 31 I think, first bow, then
rifle then muzzle-loading (!) but there's no hunting on Sundays.
I'll let others address your other questions, except to say if you're having
big crowds a plastic crate is always good for when the crowd gets to be too
much, don't let anyone disturb the pup in the crate. Mine go to big gatherings
and love them.
Good luck finding a puppy! Be careful to get one that's outgoing.
