We have seven cavaliers in residence. They all adore boating and kayaking,
and beaching, however only three of them enjoy swimming. Curiously, its two
of the non-swimmers who will brave a rainstorm to "do their duties". None
will get their feet wet with dew, they all prefer a thunderstorm to dew.
All want an exterior light on before they'll venture out at night. If want
them to go out after dark must accompany them and strongly encourage them to
leave the covered porch. They won't use the doggie door after dark.

Re fencing, two are climbers/diggers and were very creative in attempts to
follow their feline companions, #3 would wait til the excape route had been
prepared, then follow <grin>. The cats now have a cat flap into a different
area of the house, and the number of unauthorised excapes has been
substantially reduced. Have found young puppies easy to train and live
with, as well as older dogs, however the teenagers can be difficult if
adopted when slightly older. Especially if human alpha status isn't
re-inforced by working for treats, sit-stays, etc. Someone said cavaliers
are like two year olds with scissors. In my experience, they do trade on
their cute factor quite a bit, and since are usually eager to please, appear
to comply with humans, thus lapses in obedience are possibly not noticed as
early as with a larger dog. They are very scent oriented... and have a
hunting instinct.

Good luck on your cavalier quest. They're lovely critters... beware, one
is never enough!
Best wishes,

Am sure everyone's experience is different.... each of my cavaliers is
unique. A good breeder will match your lifestyle with the right dog for
you. Be sure to ask re ages and health of great-grandparents and parents.
Be very extremely careful if have young grandparents. Testing can't ensure
a healthy pup, but increases the odds of ruling out some problems.
