Terrie, I love your breeding comparison of Cindy, Brad and Danny-great example, and also very funny:) What is the difference between a breeder who knows about the breed standard and does not use it and the backyard breeder who does not even know a breed standard exists-(or health testing etc.)? I imagine you could put two nice, registered, typey Cavaliers together to breed, and if left on their own, a few generations later they would not closely resemble the lovely dogs first bred. I think there would be a tendency toward longer muzzles, shorter ears. almond eyes, greater height. If you look at populations of feral canines, they all have features very similar to one another. Without care given to those characteristics we admire they will be lost.
PS I thought it was so cute this AM to see our 3 mos.old Aussie, Fiona, (Piranha) playing tug with the Cavalier Tuffy until I realized the tug object was a CAVALIER EAR ARGH!!!!
