I guess you would have to prove yourself to be as dedicated as Dale Martin..wait, wait, wait. Ask Dale how long it took... Get to know people who are dedicated to the breed. I'd aim for those that had the breed before it *went AKC*. Avoid those that gossip maliciously, avoid those that tell you cheating is the only way to win.
Go to England to see the dogs..go to a big show, not necessarily the Club show. Make plans in advance to see a few people with the sort of dog you like..not necessarily to buy but to see what you like up close and personal. Ask for a good one...not just an AKC champion..because as far as I'm concerned almost anything can do that. Having said that I think we are getting to the point where a line is being drawn. Listen to what they have say..don't do all the talking. Decide what style you want..what faults you can not tolerate (they all have faults) what virtues you must have...(I'm a head hunter). In my opinion a breed (any breed) is defined by it's head and it's outline. You can't do it tomorrow..but it can be done.
