I think it is a hugely short-sighted overview of the breed for those observers to attribute American-bred Cavaliers as being, in some pervues, "American Type" when, as Peggy Mickelson and perhaps others imply, it may be just plain (universal) bad breed type. Let me just add that bad breed type exists in all countries and is (often) governed by how many experts at any given time period justify the leeway given to "faulty breed type" when all these folks really mean is whomever has the right financing and fan club in the judging circuits (or perhaps, giving the ticket) can impact the conformation/ stats in USA and in UK. Additionally, there was (and stil is) a lot of really crappy stuff being purchased by Americans from the UK and from a few other countries in the name of "breed type". It ain't so, but never mind, bucks speak volumes when that's the bottom line. Please understand, those of you who only read the names of the owners and breeders, that out of the top 10 conformation dogs in USA, 2 of the top 3 are bred in Europe, and many of the rest are only 2nd-generation American-bred. Their root-stock is right out of UK. But that means nothing and only speaks volumes.....
Far too many people breeding Cavaliers haven't a clue as to the history of the breeding strains, never mind the basics of sound breed type. They breed only to pedigrees and if one has no basic "eye" for the better specimens or access to peopl who do indeed have a n "eye", then quickly after the "F1" generation, these people fall into the big pool of ever-changing mediocre breeders of dogs. As one "neuveau" said to me at last year's ACKCSC national, when I complimented her on her dog in terms of its pedigree, "Oh, thank you, but I don't know anything about pedigrees....." Yes, Miss Scarlet (I thought).
