I'm sure that there are lots of breeders in the UK and in the US who keep the
dogs who don't pass health testing, and dogs who are now retired from
breeding. However, there are also a lot of breeders who place these dogs
into pet homes so that they can make room for pups that they keep, or new
lines that they bring in. When we decided to phone the breeders of the dogs
in some of our pedigrees to ask what they knew about the hearts of these
dogs, we found that many of them had been placed into pet homes as they had
passed their breeding prime. They were helpful and gave us what information
they could, but often hadn't seen the dogs for years. I know breeders who
place dogs into good homes for a variety of reasons. They, like us, have
limited space, limited energy and limited time and want to be able to let
their dogs have a life of being the only child. It may sound unloving to
some, but it is often the most loving thing you can do. I'm not sure why
people would be criticized for doing it.
