Hi List

Why is what Laura wrote on genotype v phenotype wrong (or, alternatively,
hogwash)? Everything I've ever read - Padgett, Franklin, Robinson etc - on
genetics describes in words of one syllable the difference between the two,
and gives clear explanations of various styles of breeding programmes one
can follow with indications of what to expect (particularly with Padgett's
notation system) as a result.

I understand that breeding on genotype can be a long slow upward process,
and too tightly can involve having to cull - not a happy thought and one
that most breeders won't contemplate. IMO rightly, but there are breeders
rumoured to have done it and possibly those that continue to do it.

Breeding on phenotype can be a lot quicker, with the added advantage of
hybrid vigour, but the disadvantage in succeeding generations of a whole
bunch of genes you might not want.

So you leave the hard facts of genetics and - whether you like it or not -
you're into the tricky realm of personal preference and list and planet
alike are presumably big enough to encompass the differences, especially at
this time of year.

Me? I'm still hoping for 'the nick' - the magical mating between two dogs
that produce the most wonderful offspring, whether genotypical or
phenotypical - although my personal preference is to go for the first.

Best to all
