Terrie, \A clown face is one where the coloured markings do not come right around the eye - i.e. one or both eyes are surrounded by white, not red for blenheims or black with tan eyebrows for tris. Sometimes the colour "just" misses, sometimes its almost as far back as the front edge of the ear. Its purely a chance thing that occasionally happens with the piebald gene. You can see it in other breeds too like Beagles or Fox terriers but there its not important. I have always been taught and believed that these are "mismarked" and I do not show them as the standard asks for markings to be evenly divided on the head. However these dogs can be wonderfully useful in a breeding program if they are good cavaliers. Cheers Jeanie
