Katy... What is helpful in encouraging larger litter sizes and determining the exact whelping date is to measure the LH surge (luteinizing hormone which is responsible for causing ovaluation) and correlate this to the progestrone levels (which is responsible for maintaining pregnancy). Whelping will occur about 65 days after the LH peak. The whelping calendar will only be accurate if the first day of breeding occurs on the first day of ovulation. That is why there is a variation in whelping dates with different pregnancies when using the calendar system. But it has worked successfully for breeders for years in determining an estimated date.
