Hi Katy,

I start counting when I first see blood...however, I do not necessarily
breed on days 9, 11 or 13. I watch my girls for a pattern in their first
few seasons before they are old enough to be bred. I have one girl that is
very hormonal and obnoxious when she is in season and I can tell from her
behavior exactly when she is ready to be bred and it is always
early...around day 7 or 8. I have another girl who has a long season and
her flow does not get thin until around day 14. I bred her on day 15 this
time..one breeding resulted in 4 babies. The boy was really not that
interested in her before or after that date.

I think that it extremely important to know your girl's patterns as they
are all so different. I have found that my girls do not really vary that
much from season to season. Some are ready very early to be bred and
others like my last girl take their sweet time and go out quickly. Of
course, progesterone tests are always a handy tool if you are not sure.

I believe you start counting from the first breeding. My girls rarely go
the 63 days before they whelp their pups. Day 60-61 seems to be the norm
for me...although my last 2 breedings had the puppies coming a week early.
I would start getting concerned if I had not seen puppies by day 63 unless
I had done numerous breedings (perhaps a later breeding is the one that took).

Good luck :)

Kindest regards,
Kim
