Susan and Annette

To respond to your concerns about Dr. Hutch's suggestion for gurgling
puppies:

I have a large (4' x 4') whelping box that is also very deep (2 1/2').
At one end of the whelping box I have a hanging ceramic heating lamp
which keeps that end of it very warm, the other end of the whelping
box has sheets draped over the top of it during whelping to give the
bitch some privacy whilst the puppies are being born. My vision of this
solution for gurgling puppies is to have the inclined board near the end
of the whelping box with the ceramic heating lamp, although by no means
directly underneath it, while the bitch is at the other end of the
whelping box tending to the rest of the litter, whatever their needs may
be.

Susan, your concern that the puppies not be allowed to be chilled is
something we should definitely keep in mind. I hope I have adequately
addressed that issue in this post. Annette, I find that my bitch is not
in the least anxious about not being with her newborns for a short time
so long as the newborn is with me, and especially if all of us are in
the whelping box or if all of us are within sight of each other.
