These cameras work by storing a digital image on some form of storage media: usually a memory card (or 'stick') or a floppy disk or, in the less expensive models, an internal chip.
You can then transfer the image from the camera's storage medium by plugging the camera directly into a USB port on your computer (or printer), or by removing the card or disk and placing it into a device, or specialized printer, that is connected to your computer (usually via the USB port). You can then transfer the images to your hard disk, or print them out directly. (You can also use imaging software to enhance or edit the images if you wish.) The 'dock' to which you refer is a base unit which plugs into the computer, upon which you can place the camera, to allow downloading of images - obviating the need to remove the storage device from the camera. (This is all easier than it sounds!) You do not need a scanner with a digital camera. A scanner is used to convert ordinary photographs (or other paper-based items) into digital images to store on your computer or to print out.
