I think that dock may mean that there is a cable that you can plug into the
camera and then plug the other end into the computer to download. I had a
Kodak that did this  and I hated the wretched thing. It devastated my MAC to
the point that it crashed  the hard drive everytime I used it. I sent the
camera back and bought a Sony Mavica which took photos on a floppy disk (not
an adapter, but a real floppy).

A floppy disk adapter is a unit that looks like a floppy with two small flat
batteries in it and has a space for inserting the memory stick. After you
pull the memory stick from the camera, you put it in the floppy disk
adapter, then put the floppy disk adapter into your floppy disk drive. Then
you read the photos exactly the way you would read files from a floppy or
you can open a software photo program and view the files from that
(Photoshop, PhotoSuite, Paint Shop Pro, etc).

Now, if you want to put photos that were taken by a film type camera on the
web, you do have to use a scanner. However, a digital camera avoids all
that.
