from: Stephanie Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] I read that the dewclaws on a dog (or cat) act as a natural "brake" when climbing down hill, and assist in gripping when going up a hill assiting him/her in climbing.
I think it emphasized that the dog uses the "claw" mostly going downhill and it controls the dogs speed. I think it went on to describe that the dog can pick up too much speed going downhill if the claw is not there... I'll find the article, it was interesting, and it maybe pointed to the dewclaws being used much more in wild dogs than in domesticated dogs as they are living in different terrain.. Although if you have taken your dog hiking etc. I would be interested to know if anyone has one of each (dewclaws removed, and not removed on a couple dogs) and if you can see the dog using it on a hill? that would be interesting..
