Dew claws are indeed left on some breeds for climbing, etc, such as Briards
and Pyrs. etc, but they do a job in steep terrane, and if they are removed,
they cannot be shown in the USA as it is a dis qualification.  Cavaliers are
comforter spaniels and the rear dewclaws should be removed if they have them.
 I remove the front because it makes the leg cleaner and its 4 less nails to
clip or have them catch on things :>)  Only my thoughts.
