I have Briards which also are required to have double dewclaws on their
rear legs. In fact it is not just having dewclaws but having functional
dewclaws that is best. As there are floating dewclaws...ones that are there
but with broken bone or even without a bone & just floating as an extra
appendage. Under European standards those types of double dewclaws are
noted as faults. The judges will note the lack of connection on the
evaluation sheet.
As a herder the dogs actually use those extra toes for footage. In some
Briards the rear dewclaws are very low making it more difficult for the
judge to find them however the lower ones are really better placed. In
watching a Briard herd I have seen the rear legs being used & where the
function of the dewclaws comes into play.
The Briard & the Beauceron are closely related. The Great Pryenes is
another breed that has rear double dewclaws.
A dog cannot be shown if it does not have double dewclaws but they can
have more than 2 & sometimes do. For breeders it can be a real heartache
as a beautiful constructed puppy but lacking in one dewclaw is then of pet
quality.
