As a breeder/owner/exhibitor in conformation/obedience/schutzhund of Boxers for 20 years and owner/exhibitor of dobermans for 10 years before that, when I looked for my Cavalier, I wanted structure and temperament first and the lovely Cavalier face second. It goes without saying that the parents were all health tested. I had a choice of two tri males in the litter I purchased from: a beautifully marked one and the one I purchased. Markings were only discussed, not a factor in my choice. Keno is a heavily marked Tri with freckles and I couldn't be happier with him. He is healthy, very outgoing, has excellent structure which is reflected in his athletic cavorting, and a face that exemplifies "cute" (and he knows it). As a previous boxer owner, the soft padded look appeals to me over the more angular, less padded look. Since he has 1 point and a reserve out of the 6-9 puppy classes, I assume the judges aren't too concerned with his markings either. However, if I were judging two dogs of otherwise equal quality, I would have to put up the one that has the more desirable markings per the standard.
