Sue, the offspring are also the product of their dam. If your boy didn't
develop MVD until almost 5, then he was close to the cutoff age for early
onset. Breeding him to females similar or with better records would give the
offspring a good chance of being over 5 before onset. Dr. Jacobs thinks that
3 years should be the cutoff age, not 5 years. I don't necessarily agree,
but it does make your think when a cardiologist says that onset between 3
and 5 years would meet his criteria for being able to breed the dog.

Another aspect is that the whole dog should be considered. A dog with other
excellent health tests ( in hips, eyes, patellas, etc.) and temperament and
other good qualities might be worth chancing. It turned out well for the
offspring of your boy. We always have to remember that breeding dogs is a
gamble and a trade off. In the poker game of life, some hands are worth more
than others even if there is a joker in there somewhere.
