I would be most interested in feedback from long time breeders about their
incidence of "swimmers" , have I just been unusually lucky or is Myra's
 information the norm?
 Jeanie

Hi Jeanie. In the 30 odd years we have been in Cavaliers we have only had 2
that I called "swimmers". Both were "singletons". It was my belief that
lying there getting all the milk they became fat and lazy and when the time
came when they would normally get up on their feet (around 12 days) they
were too heavy and their legs couldn't support them. But I have never had
the complete turtle. Only ever had the back legs splayed out and the puppies
pulled themselves along looking more like seals than turtles! I have never
hobbled but did make a hammock which they went into several times a day, did
the massage bit and gave them Abidec which is a multi vitamin for children.
I also placed egg trays beneath them to make sure they were moving over
crevices rather than a flat surface. Both ended up as normal puppies. In
fact the first one was "Storm" to Ch Wishwin Horatio. Craigowl Kismet had
one of the best rears we have seen! Incidentally we have just been told that
she passed away in November aged 13. She was diabetic and her heart was
clear right to the end.
