Dear Cathy Think again about novices. I fell in love with Angus, my first Cavalier, as a young puppy and eventually was allowed to have him on condition that I realised any show potential he may have had and used him for stud if appropriate.
Knowing nothing about training or showing I somehow ended up at the local all breeds club to learn ringcraft, where my boy proved to be quite a handful. In my ignorance I ignored the chairwoman's advice not to show him because of his wilfulness and took him to the show I had paid fees to enter. Contrary to expectation, my in ring prayers were answered with perfect behaviour from him and the highest number of awards when compared with other club members. Angus was a born showman who went on to achieve many, many successes including 13 Best of Breeds, 1 Reserve Best in Show, 1 Toy Group and 1 Best in Show. As is obvious, we learned together how to function as a team, each working within the needs and requirements of the other; eventually we became almost telepathic. Apart from Angus I trained his breeding partner, Emma, and his beautiful daughter, Victoria, now all sadly departed. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new show prospect to compensate for the recent loss of Victoria, in March, and look forward to building a show and pet relationship with baby Hattie in a similar way to the others. Hattie will be spoiled as a pet when at home, but as with all the others, she will learn that 'work' is a totally different ball game to which stringent standards apply. I do appreciate that you qualified your posting about novices, but please listen up out there and note that it is not always wise to judge a book by its cover.
