What I think is the best is to watch and learn. You don't have to follow suit
if you don't feel it is right.
My very first ring experience I was in the ring with Janet York and her baby
Corneel and with Karen Ostman and I think maybe it was James? not sure any
more but they were both wonderful and helpful. I felt so intimidated just by
their presents. As a novice even I knew who they were. Needless to say I had
a bitch that was not worthy to be in the ring at that time but she did turn
out to be the love of my life and the mother of a female that I have shown
twice. One a 5point major and the next lost to myself with another of my
cavaliers.
I will never forget how kind they were to me.
As a novice do what you feel in your gut is the right thing. Don't get
discourage if you keep coming in reserve. That is a good sign.
Ask questions of the ring steward if you are not sure of something.
Stand close to ringside at all times so you can see and hear what is going
on. This also means after you are done.
If you get to go to group show up! even if it is Sunday and you want to go
home show up for group. That judge will see you again sometime and you also
get to see what went to group so that you can have more of an eye for what is
going on. Who knows maybe you will get lucky and get to group and maybe even
place.
I still get nervous when I go to group.
Nothing wrong with a few entry's into the puppy class. Get your feet wet it
is all in fun!
Be a great loser and a gracious winner!
