hi susan,
i wouldnt exactly call this a double standard. there is a huge difference
between the show dog and pet and even the retired show dog.
it used to bother me a great deal to see any coated breed shaved down,
clippered, or just cut down in length, but let me present a side to it that
no one has mentioned so far. when dogs get old they dont have the stamina to
sit/stand on a grooming table for any length of time. their bodies become
more sensitive and they barely tolerate brushing. they sleep most of the
time and therefore, their coats matt more easily. i dont think its fair to
them to keep them in full coat. as i said, i used to have a real hard time
with cutting down the old timers, but when my first sheltie champion reached
15, i realized it was no longer fair to her to keep her in a show coat. that
first cut with the scissors was enough to make me cry, but she was alot more
comfortable without hair that dragged on the ground. so please think of the
dogs comfort before you criticize someone for trimming their pet or retired
showdog.
