This must be a first......hubby cross-posting to wife.

I agree completely with Maureen's position on "Pro's"; however, I feel that
there is another avenue which could be considered to "level the playing
field" between "Pro's" and owner/handlers....and between those who have a
truly excellent dog and those who can afford to employ a "Pro" to finish a
not-so-good-dog.

1. No dog may be awarded it's championship until age 18 months; however, it
may win enough points to do so, subject to the following..

2. Having achieved sufficient points to be recognized as a champion, the dog
must be "benched" and examined by three breed (or group?) certified judges.

    - these three (or, a minimum two?) judges must certify, in writing (by
their signatures on a document), that the dog meets the breed (Cavalier)
standards for confirmation and is a good (excellent?) example of the breed.

    - this certification cannot take place until after the dog is 18 months
of age.

By following this protocol, those who own a "not-so-good" Cavalier may think
twice..or several times...before hiring a professional handler, simply to
finish the dog. If their dog must be benched and examined by a panel of
judges as to whether it is of championship calibre, they will in all
likelihood, NOT BOTHER.

The down-side, of course (and there are always down-sides) is the resistance
of the Judges to put their signatures to a confirmation document as to
whether a dog is of championship calibre. There is also the question as to
whether judges will accept this additional duty "gratis".

Well......any judge worth his/her reputation should have no difficulty
signing a document attesting as to his/her opinion. Second (as to the
financial aspects) a Confirmation Show could simply charge a "benching fee"
($5.00? $10.00?) to any and all who wish a panel of judges to certify that
their dog(s) are: 1. of champion calibre:and, 2. as to whether their dog(s)
are within breed standards.

Having said all this, I would now call upon those who have influence with
the CKC, AKC and CKCSC (Canadian and American National Clubs) to really
approach the problem of Pro-leaning judges to make their determinations on
the basis of the quality of the dog.......not who is at the end of the
lease. It is, after all, a regulatory problem.
