David, I am wondering if what you are hearing is what we call a reverse
sneeze?  Has your vet actually heard the noise, or is he going by what you
tell him?  Believe it or not, a reverse sneeze is pretty common in these
guys and is frequently triggered by having a leash on.  One of mine used to
do it almost everytime I would show her because I so rarely had a leash on
her otherwise.  They stand sort of still with their heads extended making
almost a coughing, snorting kind of noise and their chests do expand as they
do it.  Next time your dog does it, go over and hold his nose down toward
his chest.  If it gets better, it may well be a reverse sneeze sort of
thing.  If that's all it is, it's harmless.  Myra Savant
