I agree with everything you said, Dave. But I would never behave with one of my own as you described you must do to have any peace in the house. I think that things have to be equitable and if a dogs of mine is making life miserable for everyone in the house as well as all neighbors except those fortunate ones who are deaf, something humane must be done. I think it is irresponsible of an owner to give his problems to some other unsuspecting person. Just as a child's behavior is the responsibility of its parents, so is the behavior of his dog. I would not allow my child to cause disturbances that could annoy the neighborhood any more than I would my dog. Our neighbors have a right to have our consideration.
Since there is something that can be done to control the effects of a chronic barker, I think it is irresponsible for the dog's owner not to take advantage of it. It benefits everyone including the dog.
