The best way to counter the pet shops is with accurate information about the breed to prospective puppy-buyers when they call you or your fellow breeders. Buying (rescuing) pet shop inventory just makes room for some more. Do not go to these places, or buy supplies from stores that offer puppies for sale. I used to go to pet shops "just to check out the Cavaliers" and prior to that, the Great Pyrenees. My advice now is "don't do it." Don't go near them at all. there are several commercial breeders who live in private homes so they can sell puppies as "home-raised". Up here in New England, there is a place called "Pick-A-Pup" and they are a nightmare for all of us. Hobby breeders who advertise in all the commercially available dog magazines are just putting themselves in the puppy-sales classifieds...where all the pet shop suppliers advertise also. work thru your regional and national breed clubs networks. This is one of the best ways to eliminate the "volume" breeders.
