Having dealt with this myself recently, I would like to offer this advice. Visit the petstore & don't come across as someone in rescue, but as an interested puppy buyer. (I know, it's hard not to slap someone!). Get all the information you can about the pet store, i.e Name, address, manager's name, etc. If possible, get any information you can about the puppy. Is is registered? With what registry? Ask to see the puppies pedigree/papers. They will usually show these to you. You will have to play their game...act as if you're interested in breeding & you want to see if this puppy would be suitable for you. :-( You will have to do a little undercover work here! Ask questions about where the pup comes from, etc. You will probably get a proud response that "these puppies don't come from a puppy mill, they come from a licensed broker who is regulated by the USDA! This is most likely the Hunte Corp. out of Goodman, MO. They supply most of the pet stores nationwide. When you get all this information, you can me or any cavalier rescue person & we will get this info to Bob Hochberg, our club's ethics chair. He can send a letter to them, but there's not much more he can do. If you can get a copy of the pedigree, that will help also. You'd be amazed at the kennels that are represented on the pedigree! The pup that I checked out was from kennels of expelled club members! When you get all the info you can, I (or any rescue respresentative) can forward this on to National. Bob will have to talk personally to the person who actually saw the puppy in the petstore so please include your name & phone # so I can forward this to him. Bob writes a letter that explains why cavaliers are not going to be profitable for these petstore ownere. He appeals to their business concerns, not compassion. After all, with these people $$ is everything!
I hope this gives everyone a head's up on what to do when you see one of these babies in a pet store. It's not much, but we try! Most importantly of all.....do NOT buy that puppy! It will be one of the hardest things you've ever done but keep reminding yourself that you would only be feeding these people's greed!
