Hi, Holli-- While I'm certain you have nothing but good intentions regarding your PETA membership, you're right that PETA strikes a nerve with some of us. I actively belonged too, many years ago when Alex Pacheco was still serving as President. I was passionately concerned with helping animals (and still am)--it seemed like a perfect match. Initially I volunteered; eventually I had an opportunity to know much more about PETA from the inside via a close friend of mine who was a staffer in their Norfolk office. The more I learned regarding what was apparently their real agenda and practices, the more alarmed I became. Years later, after being involved with a medical research facility utilizing mice, serving as president of a large all-breed dog club and as board member on another dog club, and as a committee member of the state division of a national equine association, I've become well-acquainted with PETA and its practices. About the most tactful thing I can say here is that PETA is an *extremely* well-funded and very insidious threat to all forms of pet ownership (never mind medical research), period. Sorry to get on my soapbox. It's admittedly my personal bias, and isn't aimed at you. However, I would strongly recommend to anyone considering financially supporting PETA to scrutinize information from various independent sources--you may be very surprised at what you find. I feel that there are many other organizations out there (like Lucky Star!) helping animals that are far more deserving of the income. Entirely my heartfelt opinion, ~Robyn F. --
