Although I believe the caller was way off base (I would not place a dog with her if I bred), I do not have a yard (though I will after a move at the end of April to a house with a privacy fenced yard). Not having a yard these past 3 years has me and my Cavalier out walking more than if we had a yard. Fortunately, the house I will be moving to has a wonderful route of sidewalks that many joggers and walkers use and I plan to continue our outings. The walks really are a nice way to de-stress after a day at work (I also come home every day for lunch and a short 10-15 minute walk - a great mid-day break). Maggie (my Cavalier) loves to meet and greet, she gets lots of petting. Sometimes we cross paths with fellow dog lovers and Maggie will turn on the charm.
Obviously your caller was not open to any education or assistance in making her life dog-friendly. I feel sorry for the pup who has to piddle in the house due to lack of outside visits and being ousted due to reacting to cats (I have 2 cats too, all is harmonious and fun too). Oh, another thing, I don't make much money either. But I will (and do) make sacrifices to have and care for my pets. Maggie is my first Cavalier, now I can't imagine my life without one. I hope to add another in the next two years. Although the caller hung up on you, maybe you helped plant a seed she needs to change her ways to be a responsible dog owner. My message... do not discount potential homes if they don't have a yard. As long as the owner is committed to walks, exercise, play, health care, training, and love for their dog, a yard isn't necessary. I'm sure there must be "non-yard people" who provide better homes than "yard-people".
