If I asked a breeder that question, it wouldn't mean anything other than that I was curious. I can see why it might make you wonder about the person's intentions, but I wouldn't let that question alone keep you from selling them a puppy. Perhaps other breeders had told them that they spayed prior to placing the puppies, and they just wondered if you did the same. Just a pet owner's perspective.
