While I'm not for mandatory testing I think it is just good common
sense to wait until a dog or bitch is two. I have to agree, Barb that I
feel far more comfortable waiting to see what problems or desireable
traits occur when full growth is reached. I, too, don't breed until
they are at least two. And, I test them at that time for all medical
issues (heart, eyes, hips and have a complete physical) and then again
yearly.
I'm with you on not breeding before two. However, I do want to do the
breeding in some reasonable period of time because I DO think there is
definite correlation between unbred bitches who age intact short cycling
and then possibly getting pyo. I'm convinced by the data on that one.
I think 2.5 years is a very good age to begin breeding our Cavaliers.
After all, there are many who don't actually finish up all growth before
then.
