Oddly enough, I had just such a conversation with some Canadian dog folk
during my visit to British Columbia last month. I was at a gathering of
local fanciers...mostly greyhounders,,,and I asked them if it didn't bother
them to have us in the US call ourselves Americans when there were so many
other people in the Americas who qualify
as well. They all, to a person, said "No, The US are Americans and we are
Canadians."
At first, I thought they hadn't heard the question correctly so I repeated it
in "other words" and received the same reaction. One person asked if I would
rather be called a User or an United Statesian which gave me food for
thought. I decided that, if they didn't mind, American would suit me fine.
I guess the whole world agrees since no one, to my knowledge, has expressed
displeasure in our usurping the term.
