> I have a prospective puppy buyer who also has a hampster as a pet.

Hi,
I can give you first hand experience!!!!!
We had Peggy before we ever had a hamster. Peggy is a rescue, doesnt' want
toys.
Hedwig, the hamster, doesnt' come out too much, except for the cleaning
times. Most often, she is in her little rollie ball while we clean out her
vast array of tank, tubes and modules. She is spoiled and has a mansion to
say the least. Our cat, will watch but knows she is off limits, and keeps
her distance. Peggy usually will follow and sit and watch her ball the
entire time. She had never attacked, or even touched the ball, until a week
ago......
I had just finished cleaning the cage, hubby, was nearby and always
helps reassemble the architechture. Hedwig had rolled into the kitchen and
was just between my feet, all of a sudden, there was a lunge, and a squeak,
and a Peggy, taking off with her prize......the proposed furry snack. She
was right under my feet and I caught her collar fast enough, and she didn't
have time to chomp, just roll her in her mouth once to get hold in effort to
get away. Peggy knew she was caught, dropped Hedwig immediately, as I
snatched her before she was off loose in the house. She was wet wet wet,
after having had the Pooger Bath. Hedwig is none the worse for wear, but we
did figure out that Peggy did help Hedwig escape her rollie ball.....so from
now on, the half hour it takes us to clean out the cage...Peggy will be
confined elsewhere.......
Even Peggy, whom I thought had not a care or desire in the world, had
one!!!!!!
I would still keep them both without question, it is just a matter of
logistics. If the hamster is out a lot, I would personally discuss it with
the family. At least here, there is a definite difference between the
hamster and Peggy, and no question that Peggy has major seniority. They may
think about it, and figure out their own ways of handling the situation of
keeping both. You might be surprised, at what they will eventually come up
with!
Hedwigs only saving attribute, she isn't out of the cage too
horribly often, she just doesn't want to be. She prefers to sit and talk to
me, or play with our fingers in her cage.....We are just lucky, it works
best for us,otherwise, Hedwig would be finding a new place to call home :)
Catch ya later,
Suzann
